This prevents the window from being accidentally opened, which could cause the unit to fall.   6. Expand and Secure the Side Panels: Extend the accordion panels outward until they fit snugly against the window frame’s vertical sides. Use the provided screws to fasten the panels to the window frame. This creates a tight seal and prevents the unit from shifting sideways.
  7. Seal the Gaps: Even with the side panels in place, small gaps will likely remain, allowing cool air to escape and hot air to enter, drastically reducing efficiency. Use foam insulation strips or a non-permanent, removable weatherproof sealant to fill all gaps around the side panels and between the window sashes. Avoid using permanent caulk, as you will need to remove the unit for winter storage.
  8. Final Check and Leveling: Use your level to check the unit’s position. It is absolutely essential for the air conditioner to have a slight tilt towards the outside, typically about 1/4 inch. This slight backward slope allows condensation from the internal coils to properly drain out of the back of the unit. If the unit is level or tilted inward, water will leak inside your room, potentially causing water damage. Adjust the unit’s position by placing shims under the front side if necessary.

With the physical installation complete, the final step is to test your work. Plug the unit into a dedicated outlet. Avoid using extension cords, as they can overheat and pose a fire hazard, especially with the high power draw of an air conditioner. Turn on the unit and set it to the cool mode. Listen for any unusual vibrations or noises that might indicate the unit is not stable. Feel around the sealed areas for any drafts of warm air, which would indicate a gap that needs more sealing. Finally, check outside after the unit has been running for about 15 minutes to ensure water is dripping from the drainage hole and not leaking inside.

At the end of the cooling season, cover the outside of the unit with a breathable, waterproof cover to protect it from the elements, or ideally, remove and store it indoors. When removing the unit, simply reverse the installation steps, clean it thoroughly, and store it in a dry place.
