Wall Mounted Toilet Installation: A Comprehensive Guide

Wall mounted toilets are becoming increasingly popular in modern bathrooms due to their sleek design and space-saving benefits. However, the installation process can be more complex than traditional floor-mounted toilets. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about wall mounted toilet installation, from preparation to finishing touches. Before you begin, it’s important to gather all the necessary tools and materials. Here’s a list of what you’ll need:

  • Wall mounted toilet bowl
  • In-wall carrier system
  • Mounting hardware
  • Water supply line
  • Wax ring or gasket
  • Screws and anchors
  • Level
  • Drill
  • Measuring tape
  • Adjustable wrench

The first step in wall mounted toilet installation is preparing the wall. Since these toilets are supported by the wall rather than the floor, you’ll need to ensure the wall can handle the weight. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Locate the wall studs using a stud finder.
  2. Mark the desired height for the toilet (typically 15-19 inches from the floor to the bowl rim).
  3. Install blocking between the studs at the appropriate height for added support.

Next, you’ll need to install the in-wall carrier system. This is the framework that will support your toilet and hide the plumbing. Follow these steps:

  1. Position the carrier system according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Secure it to the wall studs and blocking using the provided hardware.
  3. Connect the waste pipe to the carrier system.
  4. Install the water supply lines.

Once the carrier system is in place, you can proceed with hanging the toilet bowl. This requires careful attention to ensure proper alignment and sealing:

  • Place the wax ring or gasket on the waste outlet of the carrier system.
  • Lift the toilet bowl and align it with the mounting bolts.
  • Press the bowl firmly against the wall to create a good seal.
  • Secure the bowl using the provided bolts, being careful not to overtighten.

The final steps involve connecting the water supply and finishing the wall around the toilet:

  1. Connect the water supply line to the toilet’s fill valve.
  2. Turn on the water and check for leaks.
  3. Install the toilet seat according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Finish the wall with your chosen material (tile, drywall, etc.), leaving access panels if required by local codes.

Wall mounted toilet installation offers several advantages over traditional toilets:

  • Creates a more spacious feel in small bathrooms
  • Easier to clean around since there’s no base touching the floor
  • Allows for flexible height adjustment
  • Provides a modern, minimalist look

However, there are some challenges to consider:

  • Installation is more complex and may require professional help
  • Repairs can be more difficult due to hidden components
  • Initial cost is typically higher than floor-mounted toilets

If you’re not comfortable with plumbing work, it’s recommended to hire a professional for wall mounted toilet installation. Mistakes in installation can lead to leaks, improper support, or other issues that may be costly to fix later. With proper installation and maintenance, a wall mounted toilet can be a stylish and functional addition to your bathroom for years to come. The clean lines and floating appearance create a contemporary look while making your space feel larger and more open.
