Subaru Spark Plug Replacement: A Comprehensive Guide

Performing a Subaru spark plug replacement is an essential maintenance task that ensures your vehicle runs efficiently, maintains fuel economy, and avoids potential engine issues. Whether you drive an Impreza, Outback, Forester, or WRX, understanding the process can save you time and money. This guide covers everything from the importance of spark plugs to step-by-step instructions for replacement.

Spark plugs are critical components in your Subaru’s engine. They ignite the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber, powering the engine. Over time, spark plugs wear out due to heat, electrical erosion, and carbon buildup. Common signs that indicate a need for replacement include rough idling, misfires, reduced acceleration, poor fuel efficiency, and difficulty starting the engine. For most Subaru models, manufacturers recommend replacing spark plugs every 60,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on the engine type and plug material. Consult your owner’s manual for specific intervals.

  1. Gather the necessary tools and parts: You’ll need new spark plugs (compatible with your Subaru model), a spark plug socket wrench, extensions, a torque wrench, a gap tool, dielectric grease, and possibly a swivel joint for hard-to-reach areas.
  2. Prepare the vehicle: Park on a flat surface, engage the parking brake, and allow the engine to cool completely. Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical accidents.
  3. Access the spark plugs: Remove the engine cover and any components obstructing access, such as the air intake or ignition coils. In Subaru boxer engines, spark plugs are located on the sides, which can be challenging but manageable with patience.
  4. Remove old spark plugs: Carefully disconnect the ignition coils and use the spark plug socket to unscrew each plug. Avoid letting debris fall into the cylinders.
  5. Install new spark plugs: Check the gap on the new plugs and adjust if necessary. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of the ignition coil boots. Hand-tighten the plugs first, then use a torque wrench to secure them to the manufacturer’s specification (typically 15-20 ft-lbs).
  6. Reassemble components: Reattach the ignition coils, reconnect the battery, and test the engine for smooth operation.

Always use OEM or high-quality aftermarket spark plugs recommended for Subaru vehicles. Incorrect plugs can cause engine damage. Safety is paramount: wear gloves and eye protection, and work in a well-ventilated area. If you’re unsure, consult a professional mechanic.
