How to Fix a Severely Clogged Toilet: A Step-by-Step Guide

A severely clogged toilet can be a frustrating and messy problem to deal with. Whether it’s due to excessive toilet paper, foreign objects, or a buildup of waste, a clogged toilet requires immediate attention to prevent overflow and further damage. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to unclog your toilet effectively and safely. Before you begin, gather the following tools and materials:

  • Rubber gloves
  • Plunger (preferably a flange plunger)
  • Toilet auger (also known as a closet auger)
  • Bucket
  • Hot water (optional)
  • Dish soap or baking soda and vinegar (optional)

Now, let’s dive into the step-by-step process to fix a severely clogged toilet.

  1. Assess the Situation: First, determine if the toilet is on the verge of overflowing. If the water level is dangerously high, avoid flushing again. Instead, turn off the water supply valve located behind the toilet to prevent further filling.
  2. Use a Plunger: Place the plunger over the drain hole, ensuring a tight seal. Push down gently at first to expel air, then plunge vigorously up and down for 15-20 seconds. Repeat this process several times until the water begins to drain.
  3. Try a Toilet Auger: If the plunger doesn’t work, a toilet auger can help reach deeper clogs. Insert the auger into the drain and crank the handle to break up or retrieve the obstruction. Be careful not to scratch the porcelain.
  4. Use Hot Water and Dish Soap: If the clog persists, pour a cup of dish soap into the bowl, followed by a gallon of hot (not boiling) water. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes. The soap can help lubricate the pipes, while the hot water may dissolve the clog.
  5. Check for Hidden Obstructions: If none of the above methods work, the clog may be deeper in the plumbing system. In this case, it’s best to call a professional plumber to avoid causing further damage.

Preventing future clogs is just as important as fixing the current one. Here are some tips to keep your toilet running smoothly:

  • Avoid flushing excessive toilet paper or non-flushable items like wipes, feminine hygiene products, or paper towels.
  • Educate household members about what can and cannot be flushed.
  • Consider using a septic-safe toilet paper that breaks down easily.
  • Regularly clean your toilet to prevent buildup.

In conclusion, a severely clogged toilet can be a hassle, but with the right tools and techniques, you can often resolve the issue yourself. Remember to act quickly, use the proper tools, and take preventive measures to avoid future clogs. If all else fails, don’t hesitate to seek professional help.
